The ASF has made a submission to the Communications Legislation Amendment (Combatting Misinformation and Disinformation) Bill 2024, which is currently being considered by the Senate Standing Committee on Environment and Communication, with the committee’s report due by 25 November 2024.
We argue that the bill should be abandoned, as is incapable of solving the problem it purports to address, concentrates social media in the hands of large corporations, the proponents of the bill have not shown that existing legislation is inadequate, nor have they adequately considered unintended consequences, and we have already seen the disastrous consequences of the suppression of ideas in the past.
